Award of Prospect Mini Hyrdo Plant

11/03/2009 12:00:00 AM

Further to the recent award and operational success of Hannas Woronora Mini Hydro Plant project, Hannas have continued to develop their relationship with Worley Parsons. This strong relationship has resulted in Hannas also being awarded the Prospect Mini Hydro Plant construction, as part of the broader Sydney Water Renewable Energy Project

Similar in nature to the Woronora project, Hannas have been engaged to provide civil, mechanical and associated pipeworks to enter the existing water pipeline upstream of the Water Filtration Plant and install a turbine generator. This installation will capture the energy currently lost in the existing water flow and renewable energy will be generated from the hydroelectric plant constructed. Pipes will convey flowing water to the turbine generator, which will be coupled to an alternator. The alternator will convert the rotational energy of the turbine into electrical energy.

The following structures will be installed as part of the construction of the Prospect Reservoir hydroelectric plant:

·          In-ground Turbine House with removable maintenance access roof sections
·          Hydroelectric plant installed within the new Turbine House building
·          Hydroelectric turbine
·          Above ground 11kV Switch room provided for the hydroelectric plant

The hydroelectric unit will consist of a Kaplan turbine directly coupled to an electric generator to produce electricity at 11kV and 50Hz. The capacity of the plant will be 3.7MW. Prospect Water Filtration Plant supplies filtered drinking water to the population of Sydney and Hannas are delighted to be involved in this ground breaking project.
